Have you ever wondered how you can make your home feel more peaceful and tranquil? Growing up, I would always strive to make my surroundings beautiful and pleasing to the eye. The busyness of life can be overwhelming and exhausting, and at a young age, I understood how much my environment directly affected my well-being. There is a direct correlation between what we think about and our home, life, and surroundings.
To create a more peaceful and tranquil environment in your home, it is important to slow down and align your thoughts with the Word of God. Our home can be a place of shelter, and a refuge in times of storms. Psalms 4:8 reads, “I will both lie down in peace and sleep; for You alone, O Lord, make me dwell in safety” (NKJV).
We need to intentionally and creatively design an atmosphere in our home that is reflective of our unique desires and personality and honoring to the Holy Spirit.
The Bible says in Philippians 4:8, “Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue, and if there is anything praiseworthy¾ meditate on these things” (NKJV),
Ways We Can Bring Peace and Tranquility into Our Homes.
Clean, organize, and declutter your home; less clutter can give you clarity and help you to focus.
Create a room to meditate, pray, and worship. Worship creates an atmosphere of peace and invites the presence of God.
Natural light adds warmth and comfort to a room.
Fragrant candles and essential oils with fresh floral scents can be healing.
Fabrics and textures add beauty, interest, warmth, and dimension to a room, which make the space feel inviting.
Plants and water features can lift your spirit and your mood. The sound of running water can be cleansing.
Balance and symmetry (how equal or unequal a space appears and feels) are fundamental for good design.
How Do Colors Affect Our Well-being and Mood?
Blues or soft whites (like the colors of the ocean) give a sense of calm and relaxation. These are great colors for a tranquil feeling in a bedroom. A soft white bathroom with a blue or black mosaic pattern tile can create a clean, spa-like atmosphere, where the cares of the world begin to wash away. Bright, airy rooms with beautiful fragrant candles and fresh flowers can emulate purity and peace.
White symbolizes grace, freshness, and purity. Soft white drapes, linens, and furniture all create elegance in a home.
Red stands for passion, power, love, energy, and strength. Red is a wonderful choice for artwork, throw pillows, floral arrangements, and area rugs.
Orange is playful, vibrant, and represents vitality. A flower arrangement or an area rug with orange accents can be warm and inviting.
Yellow represents friendship, happiness, energy, youth, and optimism.
Purple stands for royalty, spirituality, elegance, and romance. Purple can be used in a beautiful duvet cover, drapes, or a timeless piece of art.
Pink symbolizes love, compassion, femininity, playfulness, kindness, comfort, and nurture. Fresh pink flowers are sure to lift your mood and bring happy feelings.
Green is reminiscent of nature, calmness, balance, and freshness. It has a natural organic feel, representing stability, and security. Try adding green accent pillows, art, floral arrangements, or an upholstered chair or sofa. These will add freshness and harmony to your space.
Imagine yourself in a forest by a stream of running water. Do you feel relaxed, calm, and able to take in a deep breath of fresh air? Bringing elements of nature into your home can create an atmosphere of joy, contentment, peace, and harmony.Psalms 18:33 says,“ He makes my feet like the feet of deer, and sets me on my high places” (NKJV).
What we see visually can distinctly affect our mood. A clean, well-organized home that is balanced with textures, colors, and materials is an invitation to feel peace and joy.
Balance is another essential element to superior design and overall well-being. It is how equal or unequal a visual appears to be. Just as our body and life need balance, so do our home and environment. Balance affects our peace of mind and mood.
We are made of spirit, soul, and body. Our spirit is made in God’s creation and likeness. The soul is the mental, and emotional part of our being. The Word of God says, “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Rom. 12:2, NKJV).
Harmony is when elements are combined to complement each other. It is the cohesiveness of bringing everything together. Tranquil spaces evoke a sense of clarity of the mind, body, and spirit, resulting in healing relationships.
Finally, by bringing wholeness, healing, and balance your environment, you can improve your health, renew your mind and spirit, and create an atmosphere of peace and joy in your home.
